If you run any small business, odds are you have a lot of information that needs to stay secure.
Clients’ credit card information, addresses, and sometimes social security numbers are all things that need to be secure. For me, I set up a secure small business network in order to keep my clients’ information safe from hackers or other outside sources.
Of course, I hired an outside firm to establish this network. My only concern was whether I could trust this chicago computer support company with access to my private business information.
The Chicago computer support company was just a third party, so I was not sure if I could trust them in this situation.
Of course, I read the contract I had with them and I knew that I had every legal right to inquire if they were taking information. I did not have any reason to believe they would take information, but I was trained to question every leak of information.
I decided that instead of trying to look over their shoulder whenever they were doing updates or fixing a network issue, that I would confront them head on. I knew that it would be rude, but I did not care how I portrayed myself if it meant protecting my clients.
As the technician was working on my server, I asked if I could inquire about something. He readily agreed, and I demanded to know if he had been looking at any of the client content. He was surprised to hear me ask that.
After all, this was the same technician who had helped me over the last year, so he assumed I found him trustworthy. I explained my situation, and he understood completely. He decided to show me something, and he said he hoped it would ease my concerns.
He pulled up a screen with user access permissions and showed me this various types of permissions each user is given. For the template he had made for himself, he had restricted access to any company data.
The only way he could access the data would be with my overall administrator password. To say the least, I felt foolish.
I had put myself in an awkward situation because I did not trust this technician who had helped me for the past year. He even tried to access the information in front of me and he was denied. I apologized and I soon realized that this chicago computer support company was trustworthy, and my clients were safe.
