Watch: The Microsoft Copilot AI Ladder

How do you get from asking AI a question to having AI complete work for your business?

In this video, Xerillion President Wayne Chapin walks through four increasingly powerful ways to use business AI:

Ask → Connect → Agentic → Autonomous

It starts with your Microsoft 365 foundation. Each rung builds on it.

Four ways to put AI to work in your business

1. Ask: Get answers from your company’s knowledge

You remember the conversation, but not where it happened. Was it an email, a Teams chat, a meeting, or a document?

With Microsoft 365 Copilot, you can describe what you need in everyday language and get help finding, summarizing, and analyzing information you have permission to access.

Ask what a client agreed to. Catch up on a transcribed meeting. Pull together the background for a proposal. Start a report from information spread across files and conversations.

Less time searching. More time using what your business already knows.

2. Connect: Bring your business applications into the conversation

Your emails and documents tell part of the story. Your sales, finance, and operations applications hold another part.

With supported connectors and integrations, Copilot can work with information from those systems too.

Imagine reviewing a sales opportunity alongside the conversations behind it. Or bringing project information and financial data together to investigate a budget problem.

The right connections give your people more useful context—and fewer places to look for it.

3. Agentic: Give AI a goal and work to complete

Think about the report someone rebuilds every Monday.

Collect the information. Combine it. Format it. Write the summary. Send it out. Repeat next week.

Configured agents and workflows can take on parts of that recurring process, using defined instructions, approved data sources, and tools.

Your team can spend more time reviewing the results, investigating exceptions, and deciding what to do next.

Start with one useful task. Test it. Improve it. Expand from there.

4. Autonomous: Start work when something happens

An email arrives. A document lands in SharePoint. A record changes in a business application.

Those events can trigger a configured agent to begin a process: gather information, assess what’s needed, and take permitted actions.

For example, an incoming request could start a process that collects supporting information, prepares a response, and routes it to the right person for approval.

You define where the system can act, where someone must approve, and how exceptions are handled.

The AI Ladder is our framework for planning that progression. The capabilities you deploy depend on your applications, licensing, integrations, and business requirements.

The foundation makes the difference

Buying a Copilot license is one step. Preparing your business to use it well takes more.

Your information needs to be accessible to the right people. Your permissions need to reflect how the business actually works. Your identities and devices need protection. Your agents need clear boundaries.

That is why we start with the Microsoft 365 foundation:

  • Company information: Organize email, files, collaboration, and meeting content so people can find and use it.
  • Identity and access: Use Microsoft Entra ID to manage who can access your systems and under what conditions.
  • Device management: Use Microsoft Intune to manage and protect the devices accessing company resources.
  • Security: Integrate Microsoft Defender capabilities to help detect, investigate, and respond to threats.
  • Data governance: Configure appropriate Microsoft Purview controls for sensitive information, retention, and oversight.
  • Business applications: Establish the connections and permissions each integration requires.

The goal is a more coherent IT system—and a stronger starting point for AI.

Permissions matter more when information is easier to find

Microsoft 365 Copilot respects existing user permissions. That makes reviewing those permissions essential.

If a sensitive document is already shared too broadly, AI can make it easier to discover. Adding Copilot does not fix the underlying access problem.

We help you address the foundation before expanding access and automation. As agents gain the ability to take action, their access, approval requirements, and monitoring need the same attention.

Control comes from how the system is configured and managed.

A practical path forward

Start with your current environment.
Identify where your data lives, how access is managed, and which parts of your Microsoft 365 foundation need work.

Choose a useful first outcome.
Better information retrieval. Meeting follow-up. A recurring report. One process that consumes too much staff time.

Prepare and test.
Configure the required services, permissions, connections, and licenses. Test with a focused group and real business scenarios.

Expand what works.
Help your people adopt it, review the results, and move into more capable agents and automation where there is a clear benefit.

You do not need to reach the top of the ladder on day one. You need a foundation and a first step that delivers value.

IT managers: Lead the next stage of your company’s IT

You know your business, your users, and the systems they depend on.

A Microsoft 365 migration or security rebuild adds a major project to an already full workload. AI introduces another set of decisions about data, access, integration, and how people work.

Xerillion brings focused Microsoft 365 and Azure experience to that project. We help you build the foundation and move forward with a plan you can explain to leadership and support in practice.

Let’s build your next step

Whether you are still working from a file server, already using Microsoft 365, or exploring what comes after Copilot chat, start with where your business is today.

We’ll discuss your environment, what you want to accomplish, and where Xerillion can help.

Microsoft 365 and Azure. Sales, integration, and support. It’s all we do.

Where Xerillion really shines, is their ability to custom tailor their services to client needs.

The single largest benefit to my company, since moving to Office 365, has been the reliable access to email. Prior to Xerillion migrating our email domain to Office 365, we experienced a lot of errors, bounced emails, and did not have the bandwidth to troubleshoot all of these issues. I no longer have to worry about whether or not my email will go down, and can instead focus on the strategic and operational aspects of my firm. Where Xerillion really shines, is their ability to custom tailor their services to client needs. Xerillion is nimble and responsive due to their size and expertise in Microsoft solutions.

We continue to be impressed with the resourcefulness and responsiveness of Xerillion's team.

The install of Office 365 was seamless and went without a hitch. The conversion was done in a timely manner and we did not experience any disruptions, which was an extremely important element of the project. One of the greatest benefits, is for those of us that access our emails remotely with laptops- it became as seamless as using our cellphones. Xerillion's breadth of technical resources, is extremely refreshing, as they are able to handle IT issues immediately. All in all, we are all very pleased with the decision we have made to outsource our IT support to Xerillion, and we continue to be impressed with the resourcefulness and responsiveness of their technicians.

Radco recently migrated to Office 365 with Xerillion's guidance. Office 365 was a strategic move & has been a stable solution.

Xerillion's responsiveness to our IT issues is unparalleled. They take the time to actually listen to the issue we are experiencing, and then put together a strategic plan to remedy the situation, all within a quick turnaround. Recently, Radco migrated to Office 365 with Xerillion's guidance. Office 365 has been a stable solution comparative to our previous issues with emails not being received by the recipients. Moreover, if it's a simple help desk question, you help us out right away. This has been very helpful to several of our employees who need to get moving or printing right away. Everything from contacting your support desk to the planning of our IT infrastructure is handled in a professional manner. If someone is on the fence about choosing Xerillion as their IT firm, I would say you have nothing to lose, Xerillion's IT support is superior and they stand behind their 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Quick response time & peace of mind with Office 365.

Xerillion's IT support staff have been first rate in being available, answering questions, and keeping the IT aspect of our small practice operational in a cost effective manner. With Xerillion's advice and guidance, the changeover to Office 365 has been sound. Having our applications in the cloud with the intrinsic abilities of cloud based applications and data to be protected, backed up, stored, and updated. At my stage the benefits are "peace of mind" elements. Probably akin to preventative healthcare steps. Xerillion's support and Office 365 has enabled me to operate my practice one more year and that's had some benefits for me as well as a number of patients who were grateful that were still able to receive benefits of my expertise. Thank you Xerillion!
